Fall Foliage and Your Hudson Valley Wedding: When Colors Peak by Region and How to Time Your Date
When fall colors peak in the Hudson Valley by region and elevation. How to time your wedding around peak foliage for the best autumn ceremony and portrait photos.
Thirty-seven percent of the weddings I shoot happen in September and October. That's not an accident. Couples plan Hudson Valley weddings around fall foliage the way couples in the Caribbean plan around hurricane season. One toward it, the other away from it.
The problem is that "fall foliage" in the Hudson Valley isn't one event on one date. Peak color happens at different times depending on where your venue sits, what elevation it's at, and what kind of weather September brought. I've lived here for decades and I still check the foliage reports every year because timing shifts by a week or two annually.
Here's the regional breakdown so you can time your wedding date with some precision instead of guessing.
How Foliage Works in This Region
Fall color moves from north to south and from high elevation to low elevation. The Catskills peaks turn first. The Hudson River valley floor turns last. The window between first color and peak color is about two to three weeks in any given spot.
Temperature is the driver. Cool nights (below 45 degrees) combined with sunny days trigger the color change. A warm September pushes everything later. An early cold snap accelerates it. Average peak ranges are consistent enough to plan around, but they're not guarantees.
Catskills: Early to Mid-October
Catskills venues sit at higher elevations (1,500 to 3,500 feet), so foliage starts earlier and peaks earlier.
First color: Late September. You'll see yellows and oranges appearing in the tree canopy by the last week of September in most years.
Peak color: First through second week of October. This is the sweet spot for Catskills weddings. The mountains are fully saturated with color, and the combination of peak foliage with warm afternoon light produces the photos that make people fall in love with the region.
Post-peak: By the third week of October, Catskills foliage is past peak. Leaves are falling. The colors shift from brilliant to muted. Still beautiful, but different from peak.
Venue timing: If you're getting married at Full Moon Resort in Big Indian, Spillian in Fleischmanns, or Seminary Hill in Callicoon, aim for the first two weekends of October for peak foliage. A September 27th or 28th wedding gets you early color with warm weather. An October 4th or 5th wedding maximizes your chance at full peak color.
Mid-Hudson Valley: Mid to Late October
Venues in Dutchess, Ulster, and Columbia counties sit at lower elevations (200 to 800 feet) and peak about a week after the Catskills.
First color: First week of October. The hilltops start turning while the valley floor is still green.
Peak color: Second through third week of October. This is the most popular wedding window in the entire region. Venues book for these dates 12 to 18 months in advance.
Post-peak: Late October through first week of November. Colors fade and leaves drop, but the late-fall atmosphere has its own quality. Bare branches against gray skies can be striking for couples who prefer moody over colorful.
Venue timing: For Glynwood in Cold Spring, Gather Greene in Coxsackie, Troutbeck in Amenia, or venues in the Rhinebeck/Hudson corridor, the second and third weekends of October are your targets. An October 11th wedding in most years gives you strong color. An October 18th wedding gives you peak to slightly past peak.
Lower Hudson Valley: Late October to Early November
Venues in Orange, Rockland, and Putnam counties are closest to New York City and at the lowest elevations. Foliage arrives last.
First color: Second week of October. Hillsides show mixed color while lower areas remain green.
Peak color: Third week of October through first week of November. This is later than most people expect. Couples who book an early October date at a lower Hudson Valley venue are often disappointed that the foliage hasn't fully turned.
Post-peak: Mid-November. By this point, most leaves have fallen.
Venue timing: For Blooming Hill Farm in Blooming Grove, Storm King area venues, or City Winery in Montgomery, push toward the third or fourth weekend of October. An October 25th wedding gives you the best shot at peak color at these lower elevations.
Photography and Fall Light
Fall light in the Hudson Valley is different from summer light and it's one of the reasons I love shooting this time of year.
The sun sits lower in the sky starting in late September. That lower angle means golden hour starts earlier and lasts longer. A 4pm ceremony in early October gets warm, directional light that a 4pm ceremony in July doesn't produce.
The combination of golden light and peak foliage creates portraits with warm tones that require minimal post-processing. I don't need to add warmth in editing because the scene provides it.
One practical consideration: the sun sets earlier in October. Civil twilight at a mid-Hudson Valley venue is around 6:15pm in early October and 5:45pm by late October. If you want outdoor portraits with both fall color and sunset light, your ceremony needs to end by 5pm at the latest. A 4pm ceremony gives you the best window for ceremony light, formals, and couple portraits before the light fades.
Temperature Planning
Fall weather in the Hudson Valley is variable. A first-weekend-in-October wedding might hit 75 degrees or it might sit at 55. By the third weekend, average highs drop to the upper 50s to low 60s.
For outdoor ceremonies: plan for layers. Your guests will be sitting still for 20 to 30 minutes. At 58 degrees with a breeze, that's chilly. Warn guests to bring jackets. Consider blankets on chairs for late October ceremonies.
For outdoor cocktail hours: fire pits and heaters extend your usable outdoor time. Many Hudson Valley venues offer these. Budget $200 to $500 for rental heaters if the venue doesn't provide them.
The temperature question also affects your timeline. In July, you can do outdoor portraits at 7pm. In mid-October, 7pm is dark. Plan your photo time accordingly.
Booking Reality for Fall Dates
Peak foliage weekends are the most competitive dates in the Hudson Valley wedding market. The second and third Saturdays in October book 12 to 18 months in advance at popular venues. If fall foliage is a priority, start your venue search early and be flexible on the specific weekend.
Friday and Sunday dates in October are easier to book and cost 20 to 40% less than Saturdays. A Sunday wedding on a peak foliage weekend gives you the same color at a lower price and with more venue availability.
I book 15 to 18 months out for October Saturdays. If a peak-foliage wedding is part of your vision, get your venue and photographer locked down early.
