Hudson Valley Elopement Guide: Best Locations, Permits, and What to Expect

The Hudson Valley is one of the best regions in the Northeast for elopements. You've got river views, mountain ridges, historic towns, and enough variety that every elopement looks different. I live here year-round in Newburgh, and I've been photographing weddings and elopements throughout this region for 25 years.

Here's what you need to know to plan a Hudson Valley elopement, from locations to logistics.

Best Elopement Locations in the Hudson Valley

Scenic Overlooks and Parks

Storm King Art Center (New Windsor) — Massive outdoor sculpture park with rolling hills and mountain views. Storm King doesn't host private events during operating hours, but the surrounding area and nearby vantage points offer similar landscapes. Check their event policies before planning anything on-site.

Minnewaska State Park (Kerhonkson) — Lake Minnewaska and the surrounding cliff trails provide dramatic backdrops. The lake's turquoise water against grey rock is unique to the Shawangunk Ridge. You'll need a park permit for any organized event, including elopement ceremonies. The park office handles these directly.

Walkway Over the Hudson (Poughkeepsie/Highland) — The world's longest elevated pedestrian bridge. It's public and free, which means you'll share the space with joggers and tourists. Early morning (before 8am) or late afternoon on a weekday offers the most privacy. No permit needed for a brief ceremony with a small group.

Breakneck Ridge area (Cold Spring) — The views from the trail are spectacular, but the hike is strenuous and not suited for formal attire. Consider the lower viewpoints along Route 9D or the Cold Spring waterfront as alternatives that offer mountain views without the climb.

Small Venue Elopements

Valley Rock Inn (Sloatsburg) — An intimate property with gardens, a stone inn, and mountain backdrop. Valley Rock can host elopements and small ceremonies with in-house coordination.

Inness (Accord) — A design-forward hotel with 225 acres of grounds. Inness can accommodate small elopement ceremonies with mountain views and architectural backdrops.

Historic Cold Spring — The village of Cold Spring along the Hudson River offers a walkable main street, waterfront bandstand, and views of West Point across the river. No formal venue needed. Walk through town, stop at a waterfront spot for the ceremony, and have dinner at one of the restaurants.

Waterfront Locations

Beacon waterfront — Long Dock Park and the Beacon waterfront trail offer river views with the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge in the background. Public access, no permit needed for a brief ceremony.

Newburgh waterfront — The Newburgh waterfront has been revitalized and offers Hudson River views with a grittier, more urban character than the manicured Cold Spring waterfront. I live in Newburgh and know these spots well.

Croton Point Park (Croton-on-Hudson) — A peninsula jutting into the Hudson River with beaches, meadows, and river views in every direction. County park, permit required for organized events.

Permits and Legal Requirements

Marriage License

New York State requires a marriage license, which you can obtain from any city or town clerk's office in the state. The license is valid statewide and costs $35. There's a 24-hour waiting period after the license is issued before the ceremony can take place (though judges can waive this). The license is valid for 60 days.

You do NOT need to be a New York resident to get married in New York.

Officiant Requirements

New York recognizes ceremonies performed by: ordained ministers, judges, mayors, city clerks, and ship captains. Online ordination (Universal Life Church, American Marriage Ministries) is recognized in New York.

My wife Rebecca is an ordained officiant and available for elopement ceremonies. This simplifies logistics: one less vendor to coordinate.

Park and Public Land Permits

Each location has different permit requirements:

State parks (Minnewaska, Harriman) require event permits from the New York State Office of Parks. Fees are typically $75-$250 depending on group size. Apply at least 30 days in advance.

County parks require county-specific permits. Contact the county parks department for the specific park.

Public spaces (sidewalks, waterfronts, bridges) generally don't require permits for groups under 20 with no amplified sound, chairs, or structures. A brief ceremony with a small group on a public walkway is fine.

Private venues handle their own permitting. You just book the space.

Planning Your Elopement Timeline

A typical elopement day runs 3-4 hours:

Hour 1: Getting ready (hotel room, Airbnb, or venue). I photograph detail shots (attire, rings, flowers) and candid getting-ready moments.

Hour 2: Travel to ceremony location. Portraits along the way or at the location before the ceremony.

Hour 3: Ceremony (usually 15-20 minutes). Immediate post-ceremony portraits while the emotion is fresh.

Hour 4: Continued portraits at a second location if desired, or wrap up at the ceremony site.

My half-day elopement rate is $2,750 for 3-4 hours of coverage. All edited images delivered within 24-48 hours via Pic-Time online gallery.

Best Time of Year for a Hudson Valley Elopement

Spring (April-May): Flowering trees, green hillsides, comfortable temperatures. Wildflower season at Minnewaska is late May. Rain is possible; have a backup plan.

Summer (June-August): Long daylight, lush landscapes. Schedule for early morning or late afternoon to avoid midday heat and harsh light. Weekdays offer more privacy at public locations.

Fall (September-November): Peak season. Foliage in the Hudson Valley peaks mid-October to early November, starting earlier at higher elevations. Book early because fall weekends fill fast.

Winter (December-March): Bare trees, dramatic light, and solitude. Snow-covered landscapes are striking, and you'll have most locations to yourself. Dress warmly and plan for shorter sessions (cold fingers and red noses after 90 minutes).
