Best Wedding DJs and Bands in the Hudson Valley (A Photographer's Guide)

A photographer's guide to wedding DJs and bands in the Hudson Valley. Who keeps the dance floor full and who works well with your vendor team.

Best Wedding DJs and Bands in the Hudson Valley (A Photographer's Guide)

The DJ or band controls the energy of your reception. As a photographer, I see this from a specific angle: when the dance floor is packed, the photos are better. When the DJ loses the room, I'm photographing people sitting at tables looking at their phones. After 500+ weddings, I can tell within the first three songs whether the reception is going to be memorable or flat.

Here's who I've worked with and what they bring to the day.

DJ vs. Band: The Basics

A DJ in the Hudson Valley runs $1,500 to $3,500 for a full wedding. They handle ceremony music, cocktail hour, introductions, dinner music, and the dance party. One person, one setup, total flexibility on genre and volume.

A live band costs $5,000 to $15,000 depending on how many musicians are on stage. Bands bring energy that a speaker system can't replicate. The tradeoff is cost, space requirements, and less flexibility if your music taste spans genres that a single band can't cover.

Some couples hire both: a DJ for ceremony and cocktail hour, a band for the reception. That works if the budget allows it.

Bands I've Worked With

Sound Society

I've worked with Sound Society at two weddings: Claire & Evan's at Hasbrouck House and Sarah & Landon's at City Winery. They fill the room. Tight musicianship, good set lists, and they read the crowd well. From a photography standpoint, a packed dance floor lit by stage lights gives me material to work with all night.

Silver Arrow Band

Kyra & Noah's wedding at Full Moon Resort. Silver Arrow is a big-name band that plays weddings across the Northeast. They're polished and professional. The energy was high all night.

Great Family Artists

Hannah & Hunter's wedding at Onteora Mountain House. Good energy for a mountain venue setting. They adjusted their volume and style to fit the space, which not every band does.

Hank Lane Music

Karen & Mike's wedding at Wildflower Farms. Hank Lane is one of the larger entertainment companies in the region. Professional setup, experienced musicians, reliable.

East Coast Band

Andrea & Eric's wedding at Full Moon Resort. Solid performance and good at keeping the party going through the late hours.

Highline String Quartet

Ariana & Sean's wedding at Red Maple Vineyard. They played ceremony and cocktail hour. String quartets add a layer to the ceremony that recorded music doesn't match. From behind the camera, the visual of live musicians during the ceremony adds to the frame.

Sound Image

Amanda & John's wedding at Red Maple Vineyard. Professional setup and good dance floor energy.

The Nines

Ellen & Evan's wedding at City Winery. High energy band that kept the party moving.

The String Girls

Megan & Emily's wedding at A Private Estate. Beautiful ceremony music. Good for couples who want live music for the ceremony and early portions of the evening.

Velveteen Ensemble

Lizzie & Greg's wedding at Seminary Hill. Unique sound that fit the Catskills setting well.

DJs I've Worked With

A Perfect Blend Entertainment

I've worked with them at two weddings: Carrie & Rose's at Blooming Hill Farm and Rachel & Matt's at Audrey's Farmhouse. Consistent performance at different venue types. They read the room and adjust. Good communication with the rest of the vendor team, which matters for timeline management.

DJ Lou Paris

Two weddings at Spillian: Juliette & Alec's and Farrah & Austin's. Knows the Spillian space and sets up accordingly. Good at building energy through the evening rather than starting at full volume.

DJ Bri Swatek

Marissa & Ian's wedding at Red Maple Vineyard. Professional and responsive. Good communication before the wedding about timeline and music flow.

James Mulry

Olivia & Danny's wedding at Roxbury Barn. Clean sound in a barn setting, which takes some skill. Barns have acoustics that can go wrong fast with the wrong setup.

74 Events / Dre Ovalle

Sophie & Gabe's wedding at Seminary Hill. Good crowd reading and solid equipment.

On1 Entertainment NY

Maddie & Max's wedding at Wylder Hotel. Professional and kept the energy up all night.

DJ Marcus Ho

Marissa & Will's wedding at Seminary Hill. Good set selection and pacing.

JD the DJ

Lauren & Andrew's wedding at Seminary Hill. Reliable and professional.

MD Music & Entertainment

Terrill & Patrick's wedding at Gather Greene. Managed the sound well in Gather Greene's open-air setup.

What I Look For as a Photographer

The DJ or band affects my work more than most couples realize.

Dance floor energy. When people are dancing, I'm getting candid photos that couples love. The DJ controls whether that happens. A flat dance floor means a flat gallery.

Lighting coordination. Good DJs and bands work with existing lighting or bring their own that complements the venue. Some DJs bring colored uplighting that can clash with the venue's natural tones. I prefer DJs who ask about the venue lighting before defaulting to purple LEDs.

Timeline communication. The DJ manages the flow of the reception: introductions, first dance, toasts, cake cutting, bouquet toss. When a DJ communicates the timeline to me in advance, I'm in the right position for every moment. When they wing it, I'm chasing the action.

Volume management. This sounds like it's not a photography issue, but it is. When the music is too loud during dinner, guests leave the room. When it's too quiet during dancing, the floor empties. Volume management affects whether people are where the photos happen.
