Best Wedding Hair and Makeup Artists in the Hudson Valley (A Photographer's Guide)

A photographer's guide to wedding hair and makeup artists in the Hudson Valley. Who I've worked with and how HMU affects your wedding photos.

Best Wedding Hair and Makeup Artists in the Hudson Valley (A Photographer's Guide)

Hair and makeup is the first thing I photograph on a wedding day. Getting-ready photos happen in the first hour of my coverage, and the HMU artist is usually still working when I arrive. Their work shows up in every photo from that point forward — ceremony, portraits, reception, all of it.

After 500+ weddings, I notice the difference between well-done wedding makeup and makeup that doesn't hold up. Here's who I've worked with across the Hudson Valley and Catskills.

What HMU Costs in This Market

Bridal hair and makeup combined runs $300 to $600 in the Hudson Valley. Bridesmaid pricing is typically $125 to $250 per person. A trial run adds $150 to $300.

Budget $1,000 to $3,000 total for HMU depending on how many people are getting services. Book 6-9 months ahead for peak season dates. HMU artists can only serve one wedding per day, so September and October availability goes fast.

Hair & Makeup Artists I've Worked With

The Luminous Bride

I've worked with The Luminous Bride at two weddings: Claire & Evan's at Hasbrouck House and Olivia & Danny's at Roxbury Barn. Consistent work across both. Makeup that holds up through a full day and photographs well in natural and artificial light. They stay on schedule, which matters when my timeline starts the moment getting-ready ends.

RB Artistry / Rachael Beach

Emma & Alex's wedding at Blooming Hill Farm. Clean, natural work that suited the farm venue well. Good at matching the HMU style to the wedding's overall look.

Annaliese & Co

Amanda & Kenton's wedding at Friends & Neighbors. Professional team that handled multiple bridesmaids on a tight timeline. Everyone was ready on time, which doesn't happen as often as you'd expect.

Gill Curley Beauty

Sarah & Landon's wedding at City Winery. Good communication about timing and space needs. Work held up through an evening reception.

Pre-Dame Beauty

Hannah & Hunter's wedding at Onteora Mountain House. Handled mountain venue conditions — humidity, wind for outdoor ceremony — and the makeup held. That's the real test.

GlamSquad

Sophie & Gabe's wedding at Seminary Hill. They send a team, which is efficient for larger bridal parties. Everyone was ready on schedule.

Kindred Beauty

Maddie & Max's wedding at Wylder Hotel. Clean work that photographed well.

Abby Lauren Makeup

Lizzie & Greg's wedding at Seminary Hill. Natural makeup style that suited the venue.

What Matters for Photography

A few things about HMU directly affect your photos:

Timing. HMU that runs late pushes the entire day back. When getting-ready takes an extra 45 minutes, that time comes out of portraits or cocktail hour. The best HMU artists build buffer time into their schedule and communicate with the photographer about timing.

Light-friendly makeup. Some makeup looks great in a bathroom mirror but reflects too much in flash photography or washes out in natural light. Experienced wedding HMU artists know how to apply for the camera, not just the mirror. This matters most for foundation and highlighter.

Durability. A Hudson Valley wedding in August means heat and humidity. An October Catskills wedding means wind. The makeup needs to hold from 10am getting-ready through midnight dance floor. I've seen makeup start to deteriorate by dinner at outdoor summer weddings. The artists on this list all use products and techniques that last.

Getting-ready photos. I document the HMU process as part of the day's story. Artists who are comfortable being photographed while they work make this easier. It's a small thing, but it affects the candid quality of those early images.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does wedding hair and makeup cost in the Hudson Valley?
Bridal hair and makeup combined: $300 to $600. Bridesmaid services: $125 to $250 per person. Trials: $150 to $300. Total budget for a bridal party of 4-6: $1,000 to $2,500.
Should I do a hair and makeup trial?
Yes. A trial lets you see the artist's work, confirm the style you want, and test how the makeup photographs. Bring someone to take phone photos of the result in natural light. If it photographs well on a phone, it'll photograph well on my camera.
How early do I need to book HMU?
6-9 months for peak season (September-October). HMU artists can only do one wedding per day, so popular artists book early. If you're getting married on a weekday or in the off-season, 3-4 months is usually fine.
Can my HMU artist come to any venue?
Most Hudson Valley HMU artists travel throughout the region. Some charge travel fees for Catskills venues that are 90+ minutes from the mid-Hudson Valley. Confirm travel logistics and setup space needs before booking. Building your full vendor team? See my complete vendor guide or reach out for venue-specific recommendations.
